FROM the NEST
Our school environments have undergone a number of safety upgrades. The installation of glass wall barriers in each front hallway and the addition of controlled access system has increased the security in our buildings, requiring everyone to enter the main offices. We appreciate your continued support of bringing your identification in with you when you sign in. The addition of concrete sidewalks and installation of the yellow stop sticks have made the student waiting areas at parent pick up much safer. Also, the newly adopted dismissal procedures have improved safety in the car pick up areas and streamlined dismissal times.
As we prepare for next year, please make sure you attend your child’s parent teacher conference. During May, K-4th grade teachers will schedule conferences to discuss your child’s progress, review their achievement data, and complete a Classroom Placement Card which is your opportunity to give input on class placement for next school year. Please know that we do not take requests for specific teachers. Any student needs or desired teacher characteristics can be outlined on the placement card. Summer learning opportunities and supply lists for next year will also be distributed at this meeting.
Just a reminder that the cut-off date for meeting the Accelerated Reader and Math Facts in A Flash goal is Friday May 17th. The Principal’s AR and Bingo party will be after Memorial Day.
This week is Staff Appreciation Week. It is so inspiring to work with such a talented and dedicated group of educators and staff who are child-centered. PTO is doing a fantastic job of thoroughly spoiling all staff members and making us feel special and appreciated. We are so thankful to PTO and all that they do to support our positive learning environment. Thank you for your support of PTO and our staff members.
Students have completed FCAT testing and we expect the results at the end of May or beginning of June. Results from the Florida Writes testing completed by fourth graders should be available the second week in May. Third graders’ FCAT results will be processed first so that students who need to participate in summer reading camps can be notified. If test results are received prior to the end of school, they will be included in the student report cards. If results are received after the close of school, they will be mailed.
We are very proud of the service oriented learning activities our students have done throughout the year. Students have shown their citizenship and responsibility by supporting the following projects: Collection for the American Red Cross for Hurricane Sandy Victims, Collected for Military Personnel during the holidays, Jump Rope for Heart for the American Heart Association, food collection for the Second Harvest Food Bank, the Goodwill Drive and the Heal Zoo Walk. In cash donations alone, our students collected over $16,800.00. Thank you for supporting these causes and modeling a service attitude for our students.
We are excited about the upcoming end of the year events and look forward to acknowledging our 5th graders at the Awards Ceremony. Parents of 5th graders, mark your calendar for Tuesday, June 4th. In order to accommodate our growing population and have all students attend simultaneously, this year the awards ceremony will be held at Ponte Vedra High School. Fifth grade students will report to school in the morning as usual, then they will be transported by bus to the high school for the ceremony. Specific details will be supplied to all fifth grade families.
This has been an amazing school year for many reasons. We are very fortunate to have the support of our community, parents and business partners. We truly appreciate all those who stand at our side supporting our school. We offer a huge thank you to PTO and the PTO board members. Board members include: Devon Witt, Nancy Slayden, Vandy Wilkins, Elizabeth Paul Magnano, Laura Nicoles, Donna McDonough, Lisa Peterson, Noelle Franco, Amy Redick, Laura Harris, Vance Edeker, and Denver Cook. PTO’s financial contributions are considerable and their volunteer efforts un-measurable.
A huge shout out to Lisa Peterson, who has headed up our Community Partners in Education. Thank you to our Community Partners: The Players’ Championship, Dr. Lazzara, Orthodontics, Fishman Pediatric Dentistry and The Ponte Vedra Public Education Foudation.
Thank you to our SAC members who have served on the School Advisory Council this year the committee includes: Ilinke Royse, Yvette Cubero, Matthew Pettibone, Michelle Ackerman, Tommy Aman, Monique Crummie, LeeAnne Davenport, Pam Ervanian, Jada Gordon, Kristi Koerner, Elizabeth Magnano, Angela Moss, Hugh Rappa, Cathy Webb, Eric Wendell, Connie Smith, Yvette Cubero, Missy Ebert, Lois Mills, Stacy Shepherd, Cindy Wondrow, and Ileana Yarbrough.
The Ponte Vedra Public Education Foundation, PVPEF, provides learning enrichment opportunities, hosts special performances throughout the school year, sponsors the Readers Aloud program, provides Teacher Mini Grants and holds the annual Art Works art show. This year alone, PVPEF has provided Mini Grants for a total of $3,299.70.
We’d also like to thank special senior volunteer, Cynthia Prince. This will be Mrs. Prince’s last year volunteering directly in the classroom. She founded and for many years headed the Readers Aloud Program. As a retired librarian, Ms. Prince has been reading aloud to students every week for more than 25 years. She has definitely made a huge impact on this community, one book at a time. She is now retiring as a weekly volunteer, but we know her positive impact will continue on in the community.
We will publish one more newsletter that will be sent home at the end of the school year and will include student recognition information. Please know what an honor it is to work with your children and represent such a fantastic learning environment. Remember to Read, Read, Read!
